COGO Calculations

Contents

  1. Direct Calculation
  2. Inverse Calculation
  3. Bearing-Bearing Intersection
  1. Distance-Distance Intersection
  2. Bearing-Distance Intersection
  3. Angle Calculation

Using Copan's COGO (or coordinate geometry) calculator you can do many different computations involving bearings (or directions), distances, offsets, angles and coordfile points.

To COGO

From the Calculation menu, choose COGO or COGO Lite.

Note that in all of the COGO calculations below,

1. To do a Direct Calculation
(traverse to new point using bearing, distance and offset from existing point)

To traverse to a new point: click Direct mode, enter an existing point number, a bearing, a distance, an offset, and the new point number, and click Calculate.

To do a long sequence of direct calculations — especially if you wish to adjust the traverse for closure — use the § Map Traverses module. To do multiple direct calculations from one to many points, use the § Field Bearings Processing module.

2. To do an Inverse Calculation
(compute bearing, distance and offset between two existing points)

To calculate the bearing and distance between two points: click Inverse mode, enter the existing From and To point numbers, and click Calculate.

To do a long sequence of inverse calculations between successive points, use the § Area and Perimeter Calculations module. To do multiple inverse calculations from one to many points, use the § Multiple Inverse Calculations module.

3. To do a Bearing-Bearing Intersection
(intersect bearings from existing points to new point)

To intersect a new point: click Intersect mode, enter an existing point number and bearing, another existing point number and bearing, and click Calculate.

4. To do a Distance-Distance Intersection
(intersect distances from existing points to new point)

To intersect a new point: click Intersect mode, enter an existing point number and distance, another existing point number and distance, and click Calculate.

5. To do a Bearing-Distance Intersection
(intersect bearing from one point and distance from another, to new point)

To intersect a new point: click Intersect mode, enter an existing point number and bearing, another existing point number and distance, and click Calculate.

6. To do an Angle Calculation
(compute corner angle at one point, between two others)

To calculate the angle at one point between two other points: click Angle mode, enter the At, From and To point numbers, and click Calculate.
