Construction Surveying Projects

Dominion/Hunt Joint Venture

1993 - 1995 General Motors Place - Vancouver

Underhill was responsible for all of the surveys related to the construction of this structure. This project was carried out under very tight time constraints and difficult conditions due to the location of the construction site.

Our responsibilities included the precise layout of grid lines, and the confirmation of form work prior to concrete pours. This was part of the quality control procedures that were implemented to ensure that 40,000lbs concrete beams could be positioned correctly in the arena.

BC Rail

1980 - 1983 (Northeast Coal Development)

Consulting surveyors for establishment of 140 km of railway through the Rocky Mountains approximately 250km north east of Prince George in B.C. This project was spread over a three year period commencing in 1980.

Initially we were involved in the location of railway centreline prior to the clearing of the right of way. This initial work allowed our company the opportunity of supplying survey crews during the construction phase of the grade. This work was through some of the steepest terrain along the route.

At the same time, we established a surface control network across two mountain ranges to control the construction of two (9.6 km and 5.6 km) tunnels. This surface control was carried out using precise theodolites and EDM's.

All data was reduced using rigorous mathematical methods during the process of deriving coordinates for the control stations around the proposed portals. We controlled all phases of the portal excavations and the driving of the four headings. Tunnel lateral breakthrough error for the 5.5km tunnel was of the order of 5cm and 10cm for the 9.6km tunnel.

During the project, survey control was provided for the construction of 15 bridges across various rivers and creeks crossings along the route. Project included initial mapping, route location, centreline layout, construction layout, tunnel and bridge layout, and electrification of the line.

Project value: $2,500,000
